According to an old Spanish saying, anyone born on December 21st will either be a musician or a thief. Rafael Cortés, who was born December 21, 1973 in Granada, chose the former. Cortés, whose grandparents came to Germany during Franco’s regime, feels home in Andalusia as well as in Essen. His family in Granada very quickly recognized his special musical talent during his visits to Granada. There he was close to the roots of traditional flamenco. But he was also fascinated by Paco de Lucía’s way of playing. With Paco he for the first time shared stage in 2007 at the Leverkusen Jazz Festival. Cortés‘ individual flamenco includes colorations of classical, jazz, and Latin music. He composed the film music of Trouville Beach and worked together with stars such as Die Fantastischen Vier, Domingo Patricio, Maria Serrano and Spanish megastar Rosa. In 1999 he released his first solo CD, Eclipse de Luna, followed by a series of other recordings. His latest album Cagiñí has been published in 2015.
No one in Germany embodies the spirit of Andalusia as authentically, virtuously, and warm-heartedly as Rafael Cortés. It is said that Larry Coryell fell to his knees and kissed Rafael’s hands.
