Tilman Hoppstock (*1961), a qualified cellist and guitarist, has been a well-travelled soloist and chamber musician on all stages of the world for over 40 years. As early as 1983/84, concerts took him to London, Athens, Paris, New York, San Francisco, Montreal, Tokyo, Mexico City, Singapore and many other cities with millions of inhabitants. He received invitations to the Royal Academy (London), the Manhattan School of Music, the University of South California (Los Angeles) and also held a guest professorship at the University of Piteå (Sweden) from 2003 to 2005. In 2013 he received the “Darmstadt Music Prize”. With three book publications (one as a doctorate) on Bach’s lute works, he has also gained an international reputation as a musicologist. His Urtext sheet music edition of Bach’s lute works is just as much a standard work for many guitarists throughout the world as his publications of Schubert songs with guitar accompaniment. His approximately 40 CDs have received several international awards. In 2018-2021 the label “Christophorus” released the productions “Bach Cello Suites No. 1, 2 and 5”, “Works by Hoppstock/Willcocks”, as well as “Variations for Guitar”. In addition to his concert activities, he has been devotedly teaching a student class at the Akademie für Tonkunst for over 30 years. Furthermore, he has a soft spot for detective stories and Russian literature, but is also a specialist in Donald Duck stories. Finally, he is a passionate art lover and enjoys – together with friends – the great wines from France and Italy.
